Thiamine/Thiamin deficiency

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency can be caused by:

  • Malnutrition
  • Alcoholism
  • Thiaminase-rich nutrition (raw fish, raw shellfish)
  • Diet high in anti-thiamine factors (betel, coffee, tea, nuts)
  • Diabetes

Thiamine deficiency leads:

  • beriberi
  • irritability
  • enlarged liver
  • edema
  • constipation
  • extreme fatigue
  • nervousness
  • severe weight loss
  • weak and sore muscles
  • general weakness
  • poor coordination
  • numbness of the hands and feet
  • tingling sensations
